Graduate Travel and Research Funding Guidelines

Master of Arts in Anthropology

Master of Applied Anthropology

The Anthropology Department has allocated limited funding for MA and MAA in Anthropology graduate students to travel to academic meetings or professional conferences or to assist with their research. These funds allow students to gain professional experience through participation in regional or national professional organizations in one of their fields of interest.  These funds can also be requested to assist the student in completing their thesis or research project (i.e., funds to run isotope or XRF analyses, funds to purchase a specialized computer program, etc.)

PLEASE NOTE: If at all possible, applications should be submitted in the fall semester (even if the funds will be used in the spring), as the department’s available funds are usually encumbered by the spring semester.

Travel funds are awarded according to the following criteria:

  • Students must be giving a paper at a conference and must have received an official acceptance letter from the conference organizer(s).
  • Students must complete the one-page Graduate Travel Application form and append to this form a one-page abstract of the paper and a copy of the conference’s acceptance letter. This form must be approved by your graduate advisor prior to submitting it to the Graduate Coordinator.
  • Awards will vary. Awards will generally not exceed $500.00. For regional conferences to which several students are going, the department may provide funding for carpooling.
  • Preference is given to students who have completed at least 15 hours of graduate work.

Research funds are awarded according to the following criteria:

  • Students must complete the Application for Graduate Research Funding and submit it and the required attachments to the department’s Graduate Coordinator. This form must be approved by your graduate advisor prior to submitting it to the Graduate Coordinator.
